Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham follow
The same filming location was also used to portray Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark. So obvs read the book years ago (it’s like an age-old ritual in a specific time and place) and TBH remember very little.
This adaptation (in one epic) seems to get it right
Apart from the strange name (someone made up by Jilly is suo de rigueur – Rupert Campbell-Black says it all – and has gone a bit too far in the dictionary) but almost immediately I started getting a synaptic snap from watching The Rivals, if I don’t remember the plot stock, with the smell of YSL opium. The silly laughs there are more of a laugh out loud and not a sly one.
Nail it from above
It quickly builds up the world – the 80s, the greedy Thatcherite old boys and yuppies, the lazy wives and the scary warlike women who treat everyone like meat no matter what they do, the conformity, the cigars and the birdie song, the English class stratification, the UK in a globalising world. and the socio-political commentary, while not in your face, is clearer than when reading the books.
Okay it’s a bit pantyhose, pantyhose panto but FFS why not?!
Maybe it’s because I’ve met more people and I’ve met more people, but I think it’s the casting, the accents, the costumes – the habit of portraying each character (to quote Bordo) and presenting them to the audience for consideration, appreciation, humiliation and/or naming.
